Last month I lit up all the Virgen Maria candles in my apartment -- I own many, I assure you -- upon hearing Chavela Vargas, my favorite person in the world, made it safely back to Mexico after being hospitalized in Madrid. Sadly, it appears my sacraments were in vain because Chavela has now back in the hospital, and she's not doing too good:
"'Chavela is stable and serene but in a critical state,' El PAIS has been told by a close source."
La Vargas was hospitalized two days ago after she was having difficulties breathing. Eduardo Vazquez, a friend of Chavela, told El PAIS the following:
"At 93 years of age, she's very tired. But she always said she would die whenever she felt like it and she's been saying her goodbyes. But with Chavela you never know. She made an enormous effort to return to Mexico because, when she was hospitalized in Spain, she feared not being able to return. At least she's here now, like she wanted."
